Soil assessment in Denmark: Towards soil functional mapping and beyond

چکیده

Soil provides essential ecosystem services sustaining and improving human life, but mapping soil functions is an ongoing challenge. Denmark has a long history of carrying out assessments − originally in order to determine tax revenues for the king, and, more recently, aiding policymakers farmers. This knowledge supported development intensive agricultural systems while maintaining provision (e.g., clean water). Getting overview historical surveys pedological approaches can generate useful information soil, identifying gaps proposing directions future research. In this review, we explore evolution environmental inventories, methods, how these factors contributed better spatial understanding functions. Specifically, discuss related water regulation drainage, groundwater surface interactions, table), filtering nitrogen leaching), carbon sequestration peatlands), production land suitability, wheat yields), threats degradation erosion). benefitted from government-coordinated approach, promoting detailed systematic national monitoring programmes. The large databases produced formed basis several properties at increasingly high resolutions over last many years based on developments machine learning. contrast methodological advances relevant contributions pedometric research, identified lack biodiversity. Digital Mapping of Soil Organic Carbon Contents and Stocks in Denmark

Estimation of carbon contents and stocks are important for carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas emissions and national carbon balance inventories. For Denmark, we modeled the vertical distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC) and bulk density, and mapped its spatial distribution at five standard soil depth intervals (0-5, 5-15, 15-30, 30-60 and 60-100 cm) using 18 environmental variables as pre...

Fostering soil stewardship through soil quality assessment

Soil quality is not a purchased technology; instead, it is a concept that can be used in making land management decisions. Researchers have generally agreed upon the soil properties that determine soils’ capacity to function and have emphasized that soil quality must be understood in context. Soil quality research has included the following: (1) soil management research, where the effects of ma...

On digital soil mapping

We review various recent approaches to making digital soil maps based on geographic information systems (GIS) data layers, note some commonalities and propose a generic framework for the future. We discuss the various methods that have been, or could be, used for fitting quantitative relationships between soil properties or classes and their ‘environment’. These include generalised linear model...
